

Diabetes is a serious disease with costly and devastating complications. The current level of government coverage for diabetes therapies, supplies and devices in Atlantic Canada is inadequate when measured against the recently revised Canadian Diabetes Association evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. The provincial government must urgently take action to ensure that the cost of diabetes-related medications, supplies and devices is not a burden to the individual or a barrier to managing the disease.
Currently, our focus is on Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland & Labrador. To bring government benefit programs for diabetes into alignment with the clinical practice guidelines, the following coverage changes should be made:
