

General Purpose of the Council
The Atlantic Diabetes Council's purpose is to promote diabetes health education to physicians (internists, endocrinologists and GPs working with the diabetes population) and health care professionals, advocate for improvements in government policy with regards to diabetes and increase research opportunities in Atlantic Canada.
Composition
The Executive will be made up of a team consisting of physician representation from each of the Atlantic Provinces, as well as other health professionals. There will be a standing constitution of elected executive committee members that hold their office for a 2-year term.
Meeting Frequency
The full council will meet yearly face-to-face at the time of the Atlantic Diabetes Update and have 1 to 2 teleconferences per year.
Charter of Goals
- Advocate for government policy to align patient access to diabetes related medications, supplies and devices with the Clinical Practice Guidelines 2003 from the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA)
- Campaign for an increase expenditure level for diabetes dedicated funding by the ministries of health of the Atlantic Provinces
- Promote development, funding and implementation of diabetes programs
- Support professional education and information availability regarding diabetes
- Assist in the development of a Diabetes Care Programs in Newfoundland, New Brunswick & Prince Edward Island
- Promote increased research awareness and research collaboration with regards to diabetes among the Atlantic Provinces
- Address the gaps identified in the Diabetes Report Card 2001
