Diabetes is a serious disease with costly and devastating complications. Diabetes related complications may be prevented with timely and aggressive management of the disease. The Atlantic Diabetes Council (ADC) fully recognizes the fiscal challenges within the healthcare system today. Yet, the alternative to increasing our investment in closing the diabetes care gap is to brace ourselves for a health and economic burden of epidemic proportions in our near future. The ADC is fully prepared to work collaboratively with government to find solutions for this growing problem.
The Atlantic Diabetes Council's key priorities are as follows:
- Provincial government policies that enable patients to access diabetes medications, supplies and devices as recommended in the Canadian Diabetes Association Clinical Practice Guidelines.
- Increased dedicated diabetes funding by the Ministries of Health.
- Funding, development and implementation of diabetes programs.
- Expanded professional education and information availability regarding diabetes.
- Development of Diabetes Care Programs in Newfoundland & Labrador, New Brunswick & Prince Edward Island.
- Increased diabetes research awareness and collaboration among the Atlantic Provinces.
- Close the care gaps identified in CDA Diabetes Report Cards.
